Liebherr LR 11000: The 1000-Ton Crawler Crane Heavy Lifting
The Liebherr LR 11000 is a machine set to revolutionize the field of 1,000-ton crawler cranes, having made its mark at the Bauma show in 2013. The crane was meant to replace the existing LR 1750, which falls below the 1,000-ton class, and the more powerful LR 11350.
Efficient Transportation
The LR 11000 has a clear design goal. It delivers 1,000-ton capacity without sacrificing transport economy. Its transport width is just 3.5 meters. Its transport height is only 3.2 meters. This enables cost-effective shipping. Transport economy is critical for this crane class. The heaviest packages weigh 60 tonnes each. Weights can be reduced to 45 tonnes. This helps when infrastructure is restricted.
The lattice sections of the crane fit into one another – the trademark of Liebherr design.

PowerBoom: Unlocking Next-Level Capacity
One of the LR 11000’s most significant innovations is the PowerBoom system, a parallel boom configuration that dramatically increases lifting capacity. In its first real-world deployment in 2014, a crane contractor used the PowerBoom to handle a 220-tonne gross load at a 30-meter radius and 130-meter hook height—a lift that would typically require a larger crane like the LR 11350 or CC 8800.
Without the PowerBoom, the LR 11000 would only manage around 160 tonnes under the same conditions. The system increases capacity by up to fifty percent through enhanced lateral rigidity and improved torsional moment.
The crane also delivered impressive results early in its career, installing one of the world’s largest rotor stars with a 152-meter diameter—a feat that required handling a 173-tonne combined load of rotor blades and hook block.
Innovations in Ballast and Setup
Liebherr integrated several advanced technologies into the LR 11000 that have since become industry benchmarks:
V-Frame®: A hydraulically adjustable folding frame with a 17-meter adjustment distance that moves derrick ballast into the required position, reducing ballast handling workload.
VarioTray®: A detachable ballast system that allows quick removal of a portion of derrick ballast using just four pins—ideal for jobs requiring different ballast configurations during boom erection versus hoisting work.
Wagon®: A ballast wagon that enables crane relocation without ballast handling.
